"Robocalls are the number one complaint I hear from seniors in the Venice area. Most people don't know that their phone and their carrier already have free tools built in to stop them โ€” they just need to be turned on."

โšก Quick Answer โ€” Do These Right Now
iPhone: Settings โ†’ Phone โ†’ Silence Unknown Callers โ†’ ON
Android: Phone app โ†’ three dots menu โ†’ Settings โ†’ Caller ID & Spam โ†’ Filter spam calls โ†’ ON
All carriers: Call or text your carrier to enable their free spam blocking โ€” details below.

Americans received over 50 billion robocalls last year. That's roughly 150 per person. If it feels like your phone rings constantly with numbers you don't recognize, you're not imagining it โ€” and you're not alone. The good news: there are several free, built-in tools that dramatically reduce robocalls without paying for any app or service.

I'm going to walk you through every method, starting with the most effective. Work through these in order and by the end you'll have cut your robocalls by 80โ€“90%.

โš ๏ธ Important: What Robocallers Want

Before we fix this, understand one thing: never press any number when a robocall asks you to "press 1 to be removed from our list" or "press 2 to speak to an agent." Pressing any key confirms your number is active and gets you added to more lists. The only right move is to hang up immediately.

Method 1: Silence Unknown Callers (iPhone)

๐ŸŽ

iPhone: Silence Unknown Callers

Works on any iPhone running iOS 13 or later ยท Takes 60 seconds

This is the single most effective robocall fix for iPhone users. When enabled, any call from a number not in your contacts, recent calls, or Siri suggestions goes straight to voicemail โ€” silently. Legitimate callers leave a voicemail. Robocallers don't.

1
Open Settings
Tap the gray gear icon on your home screen.
2
Tap "Phone"
Scroll down until you see the green Phone icon. Tap it.
Settings โ†’ Phone
3
Tap "Silence Unknown Callers"
It's about halfway down the screen. Tap it to open the setting.
Settings โ†’ Phone โ†’ Silence Unknown Callers
4
Toggle it ON
Tap the switch so it turns green. You're done. Unknown callers will now go straight to voicemail.
๐Ÿ’ก Important Note

Make sure any doctors, pharmacies, or businesses you deal with regularly are saved in your Contacts โ€” otherwise their calls will also go to voicemail. This is easy to fix: just add them as contacts and they'll ring through normally.

Method 2: Filter Spam Calls (Android)

๐Ÿค–

Android: Google's Spam Filter

Works on most Android phones with Google's Phone app ยท Takes 60 seconds

Google's Phone app has a built-in spam filter that identifies and blocks known robocall numbers automatically. It's updated constantly as Google identifies new spam numbers. Most Android phones have this already โ€” it just needs to be switched on.

1
Open the Phone app
Tap the green phone icon โ€” the one you use to make calls.
2
Tap the three dots (โ‹ฎ) in the top right corner
This opens a small menu. Tap "Settings" from the menu.
3
Tap "Caller ID & Spam"
You'll see this option in the settings list.
Phone app โ†’ โ‹ฎ โ†’ Settings โ†’ Caller ID & Spam
4
Turn on "Filter spam calls"
Toggle the switch. Spam calls will now be automatically declined and logged โ€” you'll see a "Spam" label in your recent calls list.
๐Ÿ’ก Samsung Users

If you have a Samsung Galaxy, open the Phone app โ†’ tap the three lines menu โ†’ Settings โ†’ Block numbers โ†’ turn on "Block calls from unknown numbers." This works alongside Google's filter for double protection.

Method 3: Free Tools From Your Carrier

This is the step most people skip โ€” and it's completely free. Every major carrier offers a spam blocking service. Call or text your carrier and ask them to enable it on your account. Here's exactly what each carrier offers:

๐Ÿ“ก

Method 4: The National Do Not Call Registry

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

FTC Do Not Call Registry

Free federal registry ยท Stops legitimate telemarketers (not scammers)

The National Do Not Call Registry is run by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and is completely free. Registering your number means legitimate telemarketers are legally required to stop calling you within 31 days. It won't stop illegal robocallers and scammers โ€” they ignore the list โ€” but it eliminates the legitimate solicitation calls.

1
Go to donotcall.gov
Type this address directly into your browser. The website is run by the U.S. government.
donotcall.gov
2
Click "Register Your Phone"
Enter your phone number and email address. You'll get a confirmation email โ€” click the link inside it to complete registration.
3
Wait 31 days
Telemarketers have 31 days to remove you from their lists. Registration never expires โ€” you only need to do this once.
๐Ÿ’ก Already Registered?

You can verify your number is registered at donotcall.gov without re-registering. Registration is permanent and never expires โ€” so if you registered years ago, you're still on the list.

Know These Robocall Scams โ€” They Target Seniors Specifically

Blocking tools stop most robocalls. But some still get through โ€” and the ones that do are the most dangerous. These are the scams I see most often affecting seniors in the Venice area:

๐Ÿ›๏ธ
The "Social Security" Call
A robotic or live voice claims your Social Security number has been "suspended" due to suspicious activity and you must call back immediately or face arrest. This is 100% fake. The Social Security Administration never calls to threaten suspension or arrest.
Rule: Hang up. SSA contacts you by mail only.
๐Ÿ“ฆ
The "Amazon Package" Call
A call (often automated) claims there's a problem with your Amazon order or that a large purchase was made on your account. They ask you to "verify" your account by providing your login or payment information. Amazon does not make unsolicited calls about orders.
Rule: Hang up. Log into amazon.com directly if concerned.
๐Ÿฆ
The "Bank Fraud Alert" Call
Caller claims to be from your bank's fraud department and says your account has been compromised. They ask you to confirm your account number, PIN, or transfer money to a "safe" account. Your real bank will never ask you to transfer money or share your PIN by phone.
Rule: Hang up. Call the number on the back of your card.
๐Ÿ’ฐ
The "You've Won a Prize" Call
You've won a cruise, lottery, or sweepstakes โ€” but you need to pay a small "processing fee" or "taxes" first using gift cards. No legitimate prize requires you to pay anything upfront. The gift card request is the universal sign of a scam.
Rule: Hang up. Legitimate prizes never require gift cards.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป
The "Medicare/Insurance" Call
Caller claims to be from Medicare or your insurance company and says you need a new card or updated information โ€” they just need to verify your Medicare number. Your Medicare number is as sensitive as your Social Security number. Never give it out over the phone.
Rule: Hang up. Medicare contacts you by mail only.
๐Ÿšจ If You Think You've Been Scammed

Don't be embarrassed โ€” these scams fool people of all ages and intelligence levels. If you gave out personal information or sent money, call your bank immediately (number on the back of your card), then report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Acting quickly can sometimes reverse wire transfers or stop further damage.

What About Robocall Blocking Apps?

You've probably seen ads for apps like Nomorobo, Hiya, or RoboKiller. They work โ€” but honestly, for most seniors the free built-in tools above do 90% of what these paid apps do. I rarely recommend spending money on a robocall app when the carrier tools and built-in phone settings are already excellent.

The one exception: if you've done everything above and are still getting flooded with calls, Nomorobo is the most reputable paid option at around $1.99/month. It has a strong track record and is legitimate โ€” unlike some "call blocking" apps that are themselves scams.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Do These 3 Things Today and You're 90% Protected

Step 1: Enable Silence Unknown Callers (iPhone) or Filter Spam Calls (Android) โ€” takes 60 seconds.

Step 2: Contact your carrier and ask them to enable their free spam blocking service.

Step 3: Register at donotcall.gov if you haven't already.

You'll notice the difference within days. And remember โ€” the calls that do get through are the most dangerous ones. Hang up on any call that creates urgency, asks for personal information, or requests gift cards. No legitimate organization does any of those things.
